We are excited to welcome St Monica’s Primary School to the Quirky Kid clinic as a program facilitator of our award-winning anxiety Program, Basecamp®. St Monica’s Primary School, located in Evatt, ACT, is just one of the schools we are currently working with to provide Basecamp® to their students.

Basecamp® is an innovative anxiety program designed for children between the ages of 7 to 12. Developed by Clinical Psychologist, Dr Kathryn Berry, and the Quirky Kid team, BaseCamp® draws on decades of experience, combining a sound theoretical cognitive-behavioural approach with effective, engaging and child-centred activities. Winner of multiple International and Australian publishing awards, Basecamp® is being implemented by clinics and schools across Australia to assist children in learning how to manage anxiety.

About St Monica’s Primary School

St Monica’s Primary School is a Catholic learning community for children in grades K-6. At St Monica’s, their mission is to provide strong educational programs to enable children to reach their full potential. We were impressed by their commitment to providing innovative social-emotional learning education, making the most of technology, and looking to provide holistic support for children and their families.

How  Basecamp® will be implemented

Dr Kathryn Berry and our team of psychologists will work carefully with St Monica’s Primary School to implement the Basecamp®  program. Key to the success of the program is ensuring that all facilitators are provided with comprehensive training and guided implementation to their students. Evaluation and monitoring tools will also be used to ensure the outcomes of the program are met and to develop ongoing individual intervention students anxiety.

On Friday evening we were thrilled to take home the Best Designed Educational Primary/Secondary Book award at the Australian Book Designer Awards for BaseCamp®.

The awards celebrate Australia’s bravest and brightest works in over 16 categories. With 355 entries, we were honoured to be recognised alongside other beautiful books published throughout Australia last year. We had a wonderful evening getting to learn, share ideas, and mingle with some of Australia’s top publishers and designers.

The Judges commented that Basecamp® was:

“a really wonderful example of what a book in this category can be” – “fun, engaging and sophisticated while still being accessible”.

The Judges also loved the amazing design concept commenting that the:

“strong, considered use of colour and typography the textured vector illustrations and the interactive elements” gave it an edge, “making it a book that I think children will want to return to again and again”.

The panel of 7 Judges consisted of prestigious designers and publishers, who carefully judged submissions through two rounds. After viewing submission digitally and creating a long list, Judges viewed entries ‘in the flesh’ to create a short list of finalists. The other amazing titles shortlisted in our category were:

  • Nelson Product Design & Technology VCE 4e
    Designer: Jennai Lee Fai
    Publisher: Cengage
  • Tapis Volant 1 Student Book 4th edition
Designer: Cover Design: Studio Pounce, Creative & Cover Art Direction: Danielle Maccarone
    Publisher: Cengage
  • The Cosmic Adventures of Alice and Bob
    Designer: Aṡka
Publisher: CAASTRO – Arc Centre of Excellence for All-Sky Astrophysics

We loved meeting the Designers and Publishers of these books and were impressed by how beautiful and informative the books of our fellow shortlisted titles were. We were honoured to be shortlisted for these amazing titles and delighted to take out the award when the standard of entries was so high.

Following our twin nomination to the London Book Fair International Excellence Awards, our shortlisting for the Australian Book Design Awards, I was honoured to receive the Educational Initiative Award in London last night, on behalf of the Quirky Kid team.

We’re the only Australian publisher to take home an award. The experience of receiving such recognition on the international stage was like no other. It is so rewarding when your team is recognised for their creative efforts and, especially when creating work of significant social impact and importance.

The Educational Initiatives Award –  for organisations which have produced an innovative and exciting new initiative that increases education provision and effectiveness, and wider access to learning  – went to Quirky Kid’s initiative, Basecamp®.

Basecamp® takes kids on a journey through a fictional national park to help explore their emotions, especially related to anxiety. The judges commented:

Now more than ever children and families need resources like Quirky Kid’s Basecamp. This engaging, child-centred approach would make a real difference in building children’s resilience”.

Jacks Thomas, Director of The London Book Fair, said: “The International Excellence Awards are a reminder of the magnificent work being done in publishing by creative groups of people all around the world. From translators in Serbia and librarians in Latvia to psychologists in Australia and literary agents in Spain, these awards showcase the diverse talent working in the publishing industry today. It has been a pleasure and honour to celebrate these individuals and organisations here at The London Book Fair, in the creative capital of the world.”

This award represents the international recognition of the important work conducted by Quirky Kid in enhancing the delivery of educational resources for mental health for children and young people.
