May 2012 marked an important period of international and national outreach for Quirky Kid, with the team participating in three major education conferences across São Paulo, Fremantle and Melbourne.
The month brought together two strands of Quirky Kid’s work that were becoming increasingly connected: child psychology practice and the development of practical resources for schools and educators.
Presenting at Educador in Brazil
Dr Kimberley O’Brien represented Quirky Kid at Educador in São Paulo, presenting to educators on the relationship between families, schools and children’s academic and emotional development.
The event also generated Brazilian media interest and gave Quirky Kid an opportunity to introduce its Australian-developed psychology and education work to a large international audience.

Connecting with Australian educators
During the same month, Quirky Kid also attended Positive Schools conferences in Fremantle and Melbourne.
These events created opportunities to speak directly with teachers, wellbeing staff and other professionals about social and emotional learning, classroom behaviour and the use of visual psychology resources in schools.
The conferences also strengthened Quirky Kid’s relationship with the education sector at a time when its resources were becoming more widely available to professionals through distribution channels including ACER.
A broader education and publishing strategy
Taken together, the Brazil and Australian conferences show how Quirky Kid was beginning to move beyond clinic-based work into a broader role across education, professional learning and publishing.
That combination would later support the development and international growth of programs including The Best of Friends®, Basecamp® and Power Up!.
The 2012 conference series is therefore more than an event recap. It documents an early stage in Quirky Kid’s development as an Australian psychology organisation working across clinical care, schools, publishing and international professional networks.
