Quirky Kid published its first therapeutic resource, the Just Like When Cards, in 2009, marking the beginning of a publishing program that would later grow alongside its child psychology services.
The first edition included 18 illustrated tactile cards, a make-your-own card activity and guidance for parents, teachers and therapists. The resource was developed from themes commonly encountered in Quirky Kid’s work with children and families.
Just Like When Cards were designed to help children explore experiences and emotions that can be difficult to put into words, including jealousy, sibling rivalry, peer conflict, confusion and anger.
From clinical ideas to published resources
The publication represented an important change in Quirky Kid’s early development. Ideas and tools created for use in psychology sessions could now be packaged in a form that parents, educators and other professionals could use outside the consulting room.
This became a foundation for Quirky Kid’s later publishing work across therapeutic cards, books and structured social and emotional learning programs.
A resource that remained in use
Just Like When continued beyond its original limited edition. A second edition followed in 2019, and the cards remain part of Quirky Kid’s current therapeutic resource range.
The current resource retains the core purpose of the original: using carefully illustrated situations as a starting point for discussion, reflection and emotional literacy with children and young people.
The start of a wider publishing story
The first Just Like When edition predates many of Quirky Kid’s later publishing milestones, including distribution through ACER, membership of the Australian Publishers Association, international book fairs and national publishing awards.
Looking back, the 2009 publication is significant not simply as a product launch, but as the point at which Quirky Kid began turning clinical psychology ideas into resources designed for broader use.
