Dr Kimberley O’Brien presented her doctoral research at the 2011 APS College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists National Conference in Melbourne, sharing findings on social inclusion, self-esteem and belonging during the transition to secondary school.
The conference, Theory to Practice: Positive Development and Wellbeing, was held on 25 and 26 November 2011 at the Rendezvous Hotel in Melbourne.
The Australian Psychological Society’s official conference archive confirms the dates, theme and national program, which included research papers, symposia, workshops and keynote presentations.
Presenting research on school transition
A Monash University research record lists Dr O’Brien’s paper as Social inclusion, self esteem and belonging for students in transition from primary to secondary school.
The work examined social and emotional factors that can shape children’s experience as they move into secondary education, a period when friendship networks, confidence and a sense of belonging can change quickly.
Connecting research with professional practice
The APS conference brought together educational and developmental psychologists working across research and practice. APS later reported that more than 250 delegates attended the 2011 conference.
For Quirky Kid, Dr O’Brien’s contribution reinforced an approach that continues to shape the organisation’s work: using research to inform practical support for children, families and schools.
The broader program also included specialist sessions on learning, development, wellbeing and evidence-based psychological practice.
Part of a continuing research pathway
The 2011 presentation built on Dr O’Brien’s earlier AARE research presentation and preceded further education conference work in Australia and overseas.
Her doctoral focus on school transition, belonging and social relationships also connects closely with Quirky Kid’s later development of social and emotional learning programs for children.
