About this course

Focus and attentional control are complex areas, but they're essential for sustained performance. Focus can be used in combination with other aspects of performance psychology, such as imagery. This lesson will help you to:

  • Improve your understanding of the focus spectrum by experimenting with different practical exercises requiring you to shift your focus styles
  • Develop skills to improve your ability to focus and apply your attention
  • Develop a better understanding of the impact of the surrounding environment on your focus strategy
  • Develop better arousal control
  • Increase your awareness of the relationship between focus styles and performance characteristics.

Because Robert Nideffer’s (1976) Theory of Attentional and Interpersonal Style can be complex and is best learnt in a visual and dynamic fashion, you will need to practice and try to activate the different focus styles over a period of time. Watch this video several times to help you along the way.

This lesson includes a 10-minute video and a downloadable document. It can be used on its own or as part of the Power Up performance psychology program that contains six lessons.
