Quirky Kid’s Power Up! won the Primary Student Resource – Arts/Science/Humanities category at the 2014 Educational Publishing Awards Australia, giving the organisation an important early national publishing award.

The winners were announced at the State Library of Victoria on 17 September 2014. The Educational Publishing Awards’ official 2014 record lists Power Up! by Quirky Kid as the category winner.

Independent publishing coverage from Books+Publishing also records Power Up! as the winning Primary Student Resource in Arts/Science/Humanities.

Recognising a performance psychology program for young people

Power Up! was developed by Quirky Kid as a structured performance psychology program for young people involved in sport, music, performance and other achievement-focused settings.

The program introduces practical psychological skills including goal setting, self-talk, imagery, focus and attention control, arousal regulation and competition planning. Its aim is to help young people understand the mental skills involved in performing consistently while maintaining perspective and wellbeing.

From national shortlist to category winner

Power Up! had been shortlisted alongside educational resources from major Australian publishers before being selected as the category winner.

The recognition was significant for Quirky Kid because the organisation was still establishing its publishing arm alongside its child psychology services. Winning an Educational Publishing Award provided external validation for an approach that combined psychological knowledge, structured learning and child-focused design.

The award also demonstrated that a specialist psychology publisher could compete within the broader Australian educational publishing sector.

An early milestone in Quirky Kid’s publishing history

The 2014 award became part of a longer sequence of publishing recognition for Quirky Kid. In 2016, Power Up! was also shortlisted for the Educational Learning Resources Award at the London Book Fair International Excellence Awards.

The Educational Publishing Award remains an important milestone in the development of Quirky Kid’s psychologist-informed resources and its expansion from clinic-based services into educational publishing.
