Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule

The ADOS is a semi-structured, standardized tool comprising a series of social and play activities that provide opportunities for clinical observation and assessment of communication, social interaction and play or imaginative skills. Clinicians must be trained ADOS administrators as this is the most reliable diagnostic tool currently recognized by international Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experts. The ADOS is able to detect Asperger’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder and Autism.

The ADOS consists of four modules. Each module contains a series of activities designed for use with children or adults at a particular developmental and language level, ranging from no expressive or receptive language to verbally fluent adults. Only one module is administered to an individual at any given point in time.
